COVID-19 and Parkinson’s Disease: What Do We Know So Far?

Background: Many studies on Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients affected by Coronavirus-disease-2019 (COVID-19) were recently published. However, the small sample size of infected enrolled in most did not allow to draw robust conclusions COVID-19 impact PD. Objective: We aimed assess whether prevalence and outcome PD are different from those observed general population. Methods: conducted a systematic review reporting data with diagnosis (PD-COVID+). extracted prevalence, clinical-demographic data, outcome, mortality. also analyzed risk or protective factors based comparisons between PD-COVID+ control populations without COVID-19. Results: included 16 total 11,325 patients, 1,061 confirmed The median infection ranged 0.6% 8.5%. had age 74 duration 9.4 years. Pooling all studies, 28.6% required hospitalization, 37.1% levodopa dose increasing, 18.9% died. case fatality was higher than population, longer as possible factor for worse outcome. Amantadine vitamin D proposed potential factors. Conclusion: Available indicate Conversely, current literature does definitively clarify more susceptible get infected. role amantadine is intriguing but deserves further investigation.
